As a coastal city, San Diego has a special responsibility & opportunity to stop trash before it reaches the ocean.
San Diego Trash Wheel is a community-driven effort to bring proven trash-interception technology to our local waterways stopping floating debris before it reaches San Diego Bay and the Pacific Ocean.
The Lower Sweetwater watershed has identified trash as a focused priority water-quality condition because it can harm wildlife, human health, recreation, and the waterways flowing toward San Diego Bay.
A single underground device at Sweetwater Lane Community Park captures approximately 256 gallons of trash and debris every year before it can reach tributaries of the Sweetwater River.
Stormwater carries litter through the Sweetwater watershed and downstream toward San Diego Bay and ultimately the Pacific Ocean, meaning trash dropped miles inland can become marine debris.
Explore the proposed Sweetwater River (San Diego) Trash Wheel location, how the system could work, projected impact, costs and the vision for protecting San Diego Bay.
